22 March 2002 to 20 April 2002
VIA Rail Canada
and Amtrak had introduced the North American Railpass, which allowed 30 days of
almost unlimited travel through the US and Canada. We decided to use this to
visit old friends and see new places. We made a big loop: Ottawa to Montreal to
New York to North Carolina to Atlanta to New Orleans to Los Angeles to Palo Alto
to San Francisco to Sacramento to Portland to Chicago to Toronto to Ottawa.

The Railpass
covered our transportation only: sleeping berths and meals were extra. On the
other hand, we got senior citizens' rates on the passes! The following pages
show each segment of the journey: that is, the travel to a given place, and what
happened while we were at that place. The photos are mostly of rail-related and
transportation subjects, though some family and friends are included.
